MOTIVATION

OUR MOTIVATION

Despite the earnest efforts of many organizations and government projects, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields remain dominated by white males.

  • The share of Doctorate degrees earned in the United States by underrepresented minorities (Women, minorities and persons with disabilities) is only 7% of the total and has remained stagnant since 2004. (Graph below) [1]

  • Specifically for chemistry, Hispanics and African Americans constitute 16.3% and 12.2% of nation’s population, yet only 4.4% and 6.3% of US graduate students pursuing doctorate degrees in chemistry identify as Hispanic or African American.[2]

These disconcerting trends prompted the formation of two graduate student led groups: the Organization for Cultural Diversity in Science (OCDS) at University of California, Los Angeles and the Graduate Students for Diversity in Science (GSDS) University of California, Santa Barbara. These two groups combined their efforts to form a non-profit national organization known as Alliance for Diversity in Science and Engineering (ADSE).

HISTORY OF ADSE

In 2014, ADSE was formed as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization by a group of graduate students who were part of diversity-promoting, student-run groups.

We have made it our mission to lead a national diversity initiative and unite groups of graduate students to promote diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, bringing this dialogue to the national stage.
